Black Hat Project: Frequently Asked Questions For MUAs

January 15, 2019

 Wow!  I am swamped with inquiries about my Black Hat Project!  I am overwhelmed with the responses!    I've prepared this FAQ to give interested folks detailed information on what the project is all about.

What is the Black Hat Project?

I enjoy fashion photography, and I have a collection of vintage women's hats that I've collected over the years.  The Black Hat Project will be a fashion photography collaboration between West Michigan makeup artists, hair stylists and models.  We will have fun with dramatic makeup, hair styling with a visual theme of black vintage hats.  Each Black Hat photo session will be a full day in my West Michigan photo studio.

How Many Collaborators Do You Need?

I'm planning on doing six Black Hat photo sessions over the next two months.  I'll select a different stylist for each of the six sessions.  That might be an individual who does hair and makeup, or a team of a MUA and a hair stylist.

I'm a Makeup Artist/Hair Stylist/Wardrobe Stylist.  What exactly are you looking for in collaborators?

A passion for fashion, and the awesome styling skills.  You love what you do and you want to show off your stuff.  Send me an email and tell me what you can do to make this project really special.  In addition to demonstrated styling skills, each collaborator is expected to:

  1. Make themselves available for a full day photo session in my studio;

  2. Participate in a pre-shoot creative planning session;

  3. Do the styling in my studio the day of the shoot;

  4. Participate in styling the model(s) before and during the shoot;

  5. Provide all your own supplies and gear.

I'm a model.  How can I be part of this?

This is a collaboration, so the stylists and I will select the models for each session.  I like working with models who bring ideas and concepts to a shoot.  If you would like to be considered,  send me an email.  Be sure to include your social media profiles.  Oh yeah; you must be 18 years of age or older and you will be required to sign a standard model release.  All sessions will be in my West Michigan studio.

Is There Any Compensation?  What's In It For Me?

Sorry, no one is getting paid.  It's a fun creative project and the chance to make portfolio-worthy photos with other enthusiastic artists in a professional setting.  I will give each participant high resolution files and a license to use the photos for personal use and self promotion.  And since I'm old school, and I believe in printing beautiful images, you'll get some archive quality enlargements too.

When Will The Black Hat Photo Sessions Be Scheduled?

I'm hoping to schedule the Black Hat Sessions during normal business hours.  Nights and weekends aren't out of the question, but availability during business hours is a big plus.

Is there something I forgot to include?  Contact me and I'll fill you in:
