Black Hat Project: FAQs For Models

February 1, 2019

The Black Hat Project is a fashion photography collaboration between West Michigan’s most creative makeup artists, hair stylists and models and Studio 616 photography.  We will have fun with dramatic makeup, hair styling with a visual theme of black vintage hats.  Each Black Hat photo session will be a full day in my West Michigan photo studio, and the finished photos will be tasteful and classy - the kind of high fashion images you will be proud to show family and friends.

Do I have to be a professional model to be considered?

No.  You just need a passion for fashion, and you must be outgoing and comfortable in front of a camera.  Other simple requirements are:

  • You are 18 years of age or older

  • You are available for a full day photo session, preferably during normal business hours. All photo sessions will take place in my Wyoming, MI studio in February and March 2019.

  • You like to collaborate with other creative fashion people

  • You agree to sign a standard model release

What's The Pay? What's In It For Me?

It's a fun creative project and the chance to make portfolio-worthy photos with other enthusiastic artists in a professional setting.  None of Black Hat participants - photographer, stylists and models - are paid. I will give each participant high resolution files and a license to use the photos for personal use and self-promotion.  And since I'm old school, and I believe in printing beautiful images, you'll get some archive quality enlargements too.

What's The Wardrobe Going To Be Like?

My collection of vintage women's fashion hats will be the unifying wardrobe theme.  Some of them have veils, some have feathers, some have brims, they are all very glam and fun. Every shot in the project will include one of these hats.  Models and stylists will have their choice of which hat(s) to use. Here are just a few, and I’m always on the lookout for new additions to the collection.

In addition to the hats, I have a bunch of fun accessories and bling to add to the mix.

What Else Will I Be Wearing?

I’m hoping the models and stylists might also have some personal wardrobe pieces that would look bomb with black vintage hats.  Maybe it’s that cocktail dress that you never get to wear, or that little black dress that turns heads, or those black leather pants that you don’t get to wear, or maybe even some tasteful lingerie. I also have a few items in my wardrobe collection that we can use, mostly separates like classic black blazers, leather jackets and more. I’m also planning to rent dramatic dresses from Enception Rentals or  Rent The Runway

Will There Be Nudity?

No. We will make sexy and tasteful images in this series with no nudity. I like bare shoulders and daring necklines and bare midriffs and leggy skirts – that’s about as scandalous as things will get. Everything I shoot is sexy but still PG13.  The styling team will make suggestions to flatter your physique and make you look glamorous and gorgeous, but the model is ultimately in charge of wardrobe.

How Long Will One of These Sessions Take?

The shoots will take place during normal business hours, and I’m setting aside a day for each shoot.  A full day gives us enough to time to prep and shoot at a leisurely pace and still be a little spontaneous. Specific schedules will depend on availability of models and stylists, but I expect to start mid-morning and shoot until 4pm or 5pm. Then everyone goes home, and I share proofs a few days later.  Oh yeah, I’ll provide lunch too.

Any other questions?  Send me a note or give me a call.  I look forward to making amazing images of you.
